An historic national landmark celebrating the heritage and culture of surfing is to be established at Muizenberg Beach in Cape Town where the first South African to ride waves standing up on a surfboard was recorded in 1919.

The Surfers’ Circle Walk of Fame will be constructed on the traffic circle at Surfers’ Corner in Muizenberg, the birthplace of surfing in South Africa and the epicentre of the local surfing community, which has been acknowledged as one of the world’s top 20 surf towns by National Geographic.

The landmark will feature a life-size bronze statue of Heather Price, who befriended two American Marines and learned to surf on their solid wood Hawaiian surfboards nearly 100 years ago, and a Walk of Fame consisting of paved pathways set amongst landscaped gardens and studded with plaques honouring the past, present and future legends of South African surfing.

A function to launch the concept and raise awareness and funds for the Surfers’ Circle Walk of Fame will be held at the Muizenberg Pavilion on Saturday 5 April 2014 where a model of the landmark and statue will be unveiled. The names of the first group of surfing pioneers to be included in the Walk of Fame will be announced along with the selection criteria for future nominees who will be inducted annually.

This exclusive social occasion and gathering of the surfing ‘tribe’ will feature many of the current legends of the South African surfing community alongside live music acts, audio-visual presentations and displays of historic surfing photos and artefacts.

Tickets for the launch function are R250 each, or R2 000 for a table of eight, and are available through info@thesurferscircle.co.za or can be purchased in Muizenberg at Rustenberg Pharmacy in Beach Road or Epic Print in Atlantic Road. Tickets numbers are limited and will be sold strictly on a first come, first served basis.

The Surfers’ Circle Walk of Fame is a project of the Muizenberg Improvement District (MID), a Not for Profit Company that has been inspired by the pivotal role surfing has played in encouraging economic growth, fostering cultural diversity and gaining international recognition for Muizenberg as a destination of choice in South Africa.

Surfing is both a recreational lifestyle and a competitive sport and the Surfers’ Circle aims to embrace the legacy of past and future achievements in perpetuity as a catalyst for change and social cohesion.

South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag employed her trademark vertical backhand manoeuvres to clinch third place in the Hunter Ports Women’s Classic, a 6-Star rated ASP Qualifying Series (QS) event in Newcastle, Australia today (Sunday).

Buitendag was in sparkling form, winning three of the four heats she contested on her way to the semi-finals before bowing out to Alessa Quizon (HAW) by 11.83 vs. 14.50. The 20 year-old from George collected US $1 900 (about 21 000) and 2 080 points which moved her up to No. 7 on the ASP Women’s QS rankings after three events.

The confidence boosting performance was ideal preparation for Buitendag’s campaign on the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP Women’s WCT which gets underway at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast in Queensland on 1 March. In 2013 she finished her inaugural year at the highest level ranked No. 8 and was crowned the Rookie of the Year.

The Hunter Ports Women’s Classic was won by Malia Manuel who defeated fellow Hawaiian Alessa Quizon in the final. SA’s Sarah Baum (Durban) finished equal 13th and Faye Zoetmulder ended equal 67th.

The Burton Toyota Pro, a 6-Star ASP QS men’s event, which ran in conjunction with the women’s event as part of the 2014 Surfest Newcastle Australia, was won by Matt Banting who beat fellow Australian Nathan Hedge in the final earlier today.

Beyrick de Vries (Umhlanga) and David van Zyl (Durban) were the highest placed South Africans in equal 17th place with US $2 000 and 625 points each. Slade Prestwich (Durban) ended equal 49th, Dale Staples (St Francis Bay) and Dylan Lightfoot (Jeffreys Bay) were equal 73rd and Michael February (Kommetjie) placed equal 97th.

Lightfoot also reached the quarter-finals of the Hunter Business Boardriders Pro Junior, finishing equal 13th overall.
