Anticipation is building amongst the country’s top young surfers as they prepare for the 2013 Hurley SA Junior Champs which get underway in the world renowned waves of Jeffreys Bay on Wednesday morning.

The team and individual national titles at stake, a host of lucrative special prizes, the chance to represent the country on the international stage and swell models predicting that the Lower Point will produce legendary overhead waves later in the week have combined to raise the excitement levels to fever-pitch.

Jeffreys Bay resident Matt McGillivray will be doing battle in the Under 17 Boy’s division this year after helping his Eastern Province team to clinch their first Freedom Cup team title at last year’s Hurly SA Junior Champs by winning the U15 title, the Surfer of the Contest Award and the Red Bull Airshow at the event.

“I am really stoked the event is at Point as I can just walk down and surf there almost every day which is a big advantage,” says Matt. “I’ve been trying to stay fit and healthy and have been surfing lots so I’m feeling good and am very excited for the contest.”

Fellow SA national team member Steff Burrows has a reputation of charging overhead waves in his home breaks in the Boland and is looking forward to solid waves at J-Bay in his quest for the U17 title.

“It’s sick,” says Steff of Lower Point. “I won a comp there earlier this year, so that helps with the confidence, I guess. And yeah, we’ve been getting some big barrels and uncrowded waves at home this winter.”

The Eastern Province team is determined use their home-surf advantage to add their name to the historic Freedom Cup for the second successive year in the 17 year history of the event. Meanwhile 2012 runners-up KwaZulu-Natal Central, 2011 champions Western Province and teams from Southern KZN, Border, Boland, Zululand, Southern Cape and the SA Development Academy will be doing their best to wrest the prestigious team trophy away from the hosts.

In addition to the individual champions being forever recorded in the storied history of South African surfing, the winners of the U17 and U15 boys and girls titles are also automatically included in the SA Junior team that will represent the country at the next ISA World Junior Championships.

The top performers at the event are also in line for an array of lucrative special awards, including:

• Hurley Surfer of the Contest presented by All Aboard Travel – R20 000 travel voucher to Bali
• Red Bull Best Air – R5 000
• Oakley Highest Heat Score – R3 000
• Zigzag Blowing Up Award – R3 000
• Skullcandy Team Spirit Award – R3 000
• Van’s Tarp Surf Champ – Product from Vans Off The Wall

The 2013 Hurley SA Junior Champs gets started with an opening function at the marquee tent at the Lower Point in Jeffreys Bay at 7pm this evening (Tuesday).

Continuing the family-friendly atmosphere created throughout the event by the sponsors, there is also a bring and braai with live music provided by top SA musician Farryl Purkiss at the beach on Thursday evening and the “My Dad’s Shred Sesh” presented by Firewire Surfboards and the Country Feeling Surfshop is scheduled for 4.30 pm Friday as the anticipated new swell kicks in.

The legendary waves of Jeffreys Bay will provide the battlefield for the country’s top young surfers as they compete for coveted team and individual national titles, green blazers and specialty awards in the Hurley SA Junior Champs at the Mecca of South African surfing next week.

Scheduled for 25-29 September, the 17th annual edition of this premier Surfing South Africa (SSA) event features the best 17-and-under surfers who have qualified via cutthroat selection trials for their respective provincial teams with all the action taking place in the high performance waves at The Point for the second successive year.

“Junior surfing is the future of our sport in South Africa and the South African Junior Champs forms an integral part of Hurley’s goal to turn our juniors into professional surfers and world champions,” says Hurley South Africa MD, Jevon Le Roux. “We are proud to be associated with junior surfing and everyone is looking forward to an exciting event in Jeffreys Bay.”

Hosts Eastern Province dominated last year’s event in their home surf, winning the team title for the first time and clinching three of the six individual SA titles at stake in the Under 17, U15 and U13 categories for boys and girls, along with three of the five special awards on offer.

This year teams from 2012 runners-up KwaZulu-Natal Central, 2011 champions Western Province, Southern KZN, Border, Boland, Zululand, Southern Cape and the SA Development Academy will be going all out in their quest to secure the Freedom Cup and individual national titles.

“The Hurley SA Junior Championships is the most important junior tournament on the South African calendar and Hurley’s support and commitment has turned it into a five star event,” says Robin de Kock, GM of Surfing South Africa (SSA).

“This is where our next generation of surfing stars get to strut their stuff and the fact that it will take place in Jeffreys Bay again this year adds to the stature and excitement for this special event.”

In addition to the prestige of earning national titles and having their names engraved in the annals of South African surfing history, winners will also be crowned for:

• Hurley Surfer of the Contest presented by All Aboard Travel – R20 000 travel voucher to Bali
• Red Bull Best Air – R5 000
• Oakley Highest Heat Score – R3 000
• Zigzag Blowing Up Award – R3 000

Eastern Province dominate the Hurley SA Junior Champs in their home surf at Jeffreys Bay

October 7th, 2012 No comments

Eastern Province dominated the Hurley SA Junior Champs in their home surf at Jeffreys Bay, clinching the coveted Freedom Cup team trophy for the first time in the 16 year history of the event and earning three of the six SA individual titles and three of the five special awards on offer.

South Africa’s premier event for surfers aged17-and-under ended on Sunday after enjoying a phenomenal five straight days of excellent surf at the Point with offshore winds every day grooming the waves and giving the competitors the every opportunity to showcase their talent.

The team title was extremely close with the powerful KwaZulu-Natal Central (KZNC) team from Durban finishing just 184 points behind EP in second place, with defending champions Western Province a distant third 1 143 points further back. Boland placed fourth followed by Southern KZN, Southern Cape, Border, the SA Development Academy and Zululand.

The hosts’ Matt McGillivray was the standout performer in J-Bay, producing inspired surfing that saw him win every heat on his way to the SA U15 boys’ title. He was deservedly crowned the Hurley Surfer of the Contest, in association with All Aboard Travel, earning a R20 000 voucher to any destination in the world, and then pocketed another R5 000 for winning the Red Bull Airshow where he beat the best aerial surfers at the event.

Benji Brand (WP) was on fire on the final day, employing his trademark vertical backhand repertoire to win the SA U17 title and also taking home the R3 000 for the Citroën Highest Heat Score award when he posted a 17.0 point out of 20 total in his semi-final encounter. Diran Zakarian (Boland) took the runner-up spot with Jason Harris (KZNC) in third and Ethan Pentz (WP) placing fourth

J-Bay local Gina Smith (EP) was another who went unbeaten throughout the event, going on the be crowned the SA U17 girls champion ahead of Inge McLaren (Border), teammate and last year’s U15 champion Tahra Uren (EP) and Caryn McNicol (KZNC).

McGillivray’s dominating victory in the U15 boys division saw Shane Sykes (KZNC) finish second with Jordy Maree (WP) taking third place and Nthando Msibi (KZNC) in fourth place and receiving the Zigzag Blowing Up award and a R3 000 prize-purse.

The U15 girls’ final was a closely fought affair and when the spray settled Crystal Hulett (EP) was the champion with Chanelle Botha (SKZN) close behind and Olivia Brand (KZNC) and Ruth Armstrong (WP) placing third and fourth.

Adin Masencamp (Boland), who had held the lead in the Citroën Highest Heat Score award for the first four days of the tournament, successfully defended his U13 boys’ title, finishing just ahead of arch-rival Ethan Fletcher (WP). Jose Faulkner (EP) took third and Max Elkington (WP) placed fourth.

The U13 girls’ title went to Sophie Bell (KZNC) who racked up a massive 15.0 points to deny Kai Woolf (EP) a second successive title in her home surf. Ashleigh Vaughan finished ahead of Danica Stockigt (Border) in the final to grab third place.

The Skullcandy Team Spirit award was presented to Eastern Province whose enthusiasm and support for their teammates paid off with team and individual honours that will go down in the annals of SA surfing history.

Perfect day in paradise for Day 4 of Hurley SA Junior Champs at Jeffreys Bay

October 6th, 2012 No comments

South Africa’s best young surfers enjoyed another perfect day in paradise with the Point at Jeffreys Bay resembling a wavepark as set after set of ideally groomed one to 1.5 metre waves peeled through the hallowed break on the penultimate day of the Hurley SA Junior Champs on Saturday.

Spectacular rides, stirring victories, upsets and heartbreak were seen as all six age groups have been whittled down to the semi-finalists in preparation for tomorrow’s final day when individual and team champions will be crowned, special accolades awarded and history written.

The only girls in action today were the U15 division and Chanelle Botha from Southern KZN, who posted the highest heat score at last year’s event, showed she is the one to beat by recording the highest single wave score of this year’s event so far, a near perfect 9.50 out of 10, as she advanced to the last eight with a convincing heat win.

“I picked up that good one way on the outside and did a few turns, two cutbacks and then a re-entry before I came into the shore-break and pulled off a big closeout move,” Botha said of her best ride.

Two rounds were run in all three boys divisions and in the premier U17 category, Bryce Burness (KZNC) and Benji Brand (WP) each posted two victories as they progressed to the semis. They were joined by Western Province’s Dylan Wichmann and Ethan Pentz, Boland’s Diran Zakarian and Hilton Pelzer, Jason Harris (KZNC) and Dane van Greunen from the hosts Eastern Province, with defending champion Josh Smit (KZNC) losing out in Round 5.

Like their older counterparts, Matt McGillivray (EP) and Stef Burrows (Boland) racked up two wins today and go into tomorrow’s final day with plenty of momentum. McGillivray has EP teammates Tim Baard and Jerry van Wyk with him in the last eight along with KZN Central’s Nthando Msibi and Shane Sykes, Michael Monk (Border) and Jordy Maree (WP).

The U13 boys provided some of the standout performances of the day with defending champion Adin Masencamp (Boland), the leader in the Citroën Highest Heat Score award and the winner of each of his three heats to date, again on fire. Ethan Fletcher and WP teammate Max Elkington also take heat-winning confidence into the final day and they will be up against Koby Oberholzer (SKZN), Luke Malherbe (Border) and 2011 finalist Jose Faulkner (EP) in his home surf.

The prestigious inter-provincial Freedom Cup is still up for grabs with the holders Western Province, KZN Central and hosts Eastern Province all having plenty of team members in contention for honours and earning points towards their team’s total.

The Red Bull Airshow and its winner-takes-all R5 000 prize-purse will feature the contest’s best aerial competitors flying high above the waves just before the finals start tomorrow.

The top surfer of the event will take home the Hurley Surfer of the Contest title which, in association with All Aboard Travel, earns the winner a R20 000 travel voucher that can be used to visit destinations worldwide.

And there are also the Zigzag Blowing Up Award and R3 000 for the surfer producing the most impressive performances during the event, the Skullcandy Team Spirit award for the provincial team displaying the best camaraderie and support for their teammates and the Citroën Highest Heat Score title that honours the surfer who posts the biggest heat tally across all divisions throughout the entire five day event with a R3 000 payout.

Sunday’s schedule starts with the girls and then boys semi-finals followed by the Red Bull Airshow and then the six finals, with the awards ceremony scheduled for 4pm at the beach.
