Capetonians can look forward to a bigger and better ‘celebration of beach culture’ when the seventh edition of the Earthwave Beach Festival is run at Muizenberg on the weekend 26 & 27 September.

Along with the popular attempt to improve the Guinness World Record for the ‘most surfers riding the same wave’, the beach and surf activities for the whole family and the talks and displays on sustainable lifestyles, this year’s event has been expanded to include a colourful attempt to set a new world record for the ‘largest bikini parade’ and live entertainment, exhibitions, food sales and a beach bar in the Pavilion on the water’s edge overlooking the action.

Kahuna Promotions, founders of the Earthwave concept and holders of the record for the ‘most surfers riding the same wave’ (110 recorded at Earthwave in 2009), have joined forces with outdoor festival experts, GoodTimes Events, to take the entertainment, exhibition, sales and food offerings to new heights this year.

“Earthwave has grown so much since 2006 that we decided the time was right to team up with professionals to expand the entertainment aspects,” explained Dene Botha of Kahuna Promotions. “GoodTimes Events was an obvious choice as their Flamjangled Tea Party and Earthdance are such inspiring and brilliantly organised events.”

“GoodTimes Events are very excited to be joining Kahuna Promotions to provide some additional fun, flare and entertainment to Earthwave 2015,” said Regan Tacon of GoodTimes Events. “We love everything about Earthwave and really look forward to adding a new twist that will help to grow the festival into something even more special than it already is.”

The reaction to the announcement of the event has been overwhelming. Over the past week the Facebook event page has reached nearly 180 000 people, more than 3 600 of whom have already indicated that they will be attending the festival.

Enquiries are flooding in from those who want to participate in the surfing and bikini record attempts, display and sell their environmentally friendly goods and services, provide and attend the entertainment and volunteer to assist in running the festival activities.

Early adopters eager to take advantage of the marketing and sales opportunities provided at the festival are as diverse as Rafikis Restaurant and Bar, the Kingii personal inflatable safety device and the Pole Yard timber products.

UBER have offered all first time users a Free trip to the event to the value of R200 if they sign up at with the code Earthwave 2015 while a platform for fast, efficient communications with participants, celebrities, staff and sponsors has been supplied by

To reduce the carbon footprint of the festival and alleviate parking problems negotiations are in progress with Metrorail to provide additional security on all trains to and from Muizenberg station, which is situated right inside the festival venue, on Sunday 27 September. And the organisers are researching options for renewable energy solutions to power the PA systems and other electrical requirements.

The entertainment programme is nearly finalised and will be released shortly along with details of the unique pre-event online registration system for participants in the record attempts which is designed to streamline the onsite signup procedures on the day.

Earthwave will continue to support worthy causes and a share of the revenue from the festival will be donated to the Dare to Share charity that does so much to assist those in need and the NSRI whose admirable efforts keep ocean users safe.

Cape Town surfer Dene Botha is at it again! The 28 year-old surf coach, commentator, actor and entrepreneur has been selected as one of 50 finalists in the 2010 Cleo Bachelor of the Year that will crown the country’s ‘most eligible bachelor’ in December.

Having already been awarded the Axe Sweet Life ‘Most Irresistible Man’ and Mamba-online ‘Sexiest Man’ titles in 2009, as well as featuring as Mr March in Cosmo’s ‘12 Sexiest Men’ last year, your vote can help Dene clinch the 2010 Cleo award.

Currently No. 4 in the rankings, he needs to make the top 15 to qualify for the glittering final awards function in Johannesburg on 4 December where a judging panel will decide the Cleo Bachelor of the Year.

The winner takes home prizes totalling around R130 000 including a Suzuki Alto 1.0 GLS car, a Canon Digital PowerShot SX20 camera, an XBOX 360 gaming console and a Paco Rabanne Black XS hamper along with becoming a Brand Ambassador for The Cross Trainer group.

As the judging panel will take the number of votes cast by the public into account when deciding the winner, you can assist by SMS’ing ‘DENE’ to 35915 before the 15 finalists are selected on 30 November.

To make it worth your while, voting for Dene makes you eligible to win one of two great prizes – either a hamper of VonZipper eyewear and accessories or a two night stay for two at the upmarket Almasi guest house in Sea Point.

To become a prize-winner just add Dene’s number – 082 687 8434 – to the SMS you send to 35915 when voting, or find ‘Dene Botha’ on Facebook and leave a message on his Wall notifying him that you have voted. Winners will be announced on Facebook and contacted personally.

For further details see where you can also enter to win one of five hampers of Paco Rabanne his and hers fragrances.

You can only vote once so to prove the adage that ‘Surfers Rule!’ send ‘DENE’ to 35915 and help to get him elected as the Cleo Bachelor of the Year!
