The third annual Kahuna Surf Series (KSS) for novice surfers and emerging surf stars will start at Muizenberg on the first weekend in October followed by either Big Bay or Melkbosstrand on the last weekend of the month and culminates with the crowning of the KSS champions at Kommetjie in December.

Sanctioned by Western Province Surfing (WPS), the governing body for the sport in the region, KSS events cater for girls and boys in under 10, U12, U14 and U16 divisions and are restricted to surfers who have not previously WON a nationally rated event, except for the annual SA Grommet Games.

This criteria is designed to foster and encourage novice surfers to enter the competitive surfing arena and to provide valuable competition practice for emerging surf stars with valuable product prizes from many of the country's top surf brands at stake at each of the events and for the overall series winners in each category.

Following the successful formula of the past two years that has seen many KSS champions go on to represent the Western Province and Boland provincial surf teams at national level, the 2007 KSS events will be held at the following venues

  • KSS #1 – Muizenberg Corner – October 6 & 7
  • KSS #2 – Big Bay or Melkbos – October 27 & 28
  • KSS #3 – Kommetjie – December 1 & 2
"The Kahuna Surf Series is designed to introduce newcomers to the sport and groom Cape Town's future surf stars," explains Dene Botha of the Kahuna Surfing Academy who founded the KSS in 2005.

"By holding events in the three most popular surf areas on the Peninsula, the majority of the competitors will have one event at their home break and then need to cope with unfamiliar conditions at the other two which improves their surfing knowledge, confidence and competitive ability."

"Plenty of fun activities are organised for everyone who attends the events and, thanks to generous sponsorship from many of SA's leading surf brands, there are substantial prizes such as custom surfboards, wetsuits, sunglasses, shoes and apparel for the series and event champions."

Finalists in each contest receive certificates, series champions are awarded medals and valuable prizes will again be provided by Reef Wetsuits, Von Zipper eyewear, Kustom footwear, Palmer's surf wax and accessories, Zigzag surf magazine, Lifestyle Surf Shop, Atlantic Surf and DVG Surfboards who will be joined this year by Fox, Lizzard, Surf Zone and Billabong.

Entry forms can be downloaded from the link above and all three events can be entered on one form Please note that entries officially close on the Monday before each event or once a division is full. Late entries are accepted and placed on an Alternates List in date order and only get into the event if space is available.
